Winch Design for Sensemakers

Designing a custom winch for the SenseBoat to enable data collection at greater depths

The Project

Sensemakers is a company based in Denmark that designs and manufactures a USV (uncrewed surface vessel) named SenseBoat. The purpose of SenseBoat is to autonomously collect environmental data at sea at a large scale. The collection of said environmental data (such as water quality and biodiversity) enables scientific research and regenerative management of ocean environments. Currently, SenseBoat is only able to collect water quality data at the surface of the ocean as the vessel itself only moves along the surface. However, it is desirable to collect water quality data at greater depths than just the surface. To be able to collect water quality data at greater depths Sensemakers wanted to use a winch. A winch is a mechanism that can spool a cable in and out which enables the water quality sensor that Sensemakers uses to be raised and lowered through the water column, enabling data collection at depths down to 50m.
